28 February 10

Today marks the birthday of chemistry hero Linus Pauling (1901-1994). He was a pioneer in studying the nature of chemical bonding, and introduced the concept of electronegativity to account for many properties of molecules. He also became famous for promoting megadoses of vitamin C for treating the common cold and for general health.

(Also of note for February 28 is the anniversary of the discovery of the "double helix" structure for DNA, by Francis Crick and James Watson (depending in part of work by Rosalind Franklin) in 1953.)
