Today marks the birthday of Wilhelm Ostwald (9/2/1853 - 4/4/1932), a Russian-born German chemist who developed the large-scale chemical reactions (now callled the Ostwald process) for making nitric acid. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1909.
