10 November 08

On this date in 1951, direct-dial, coast-to-coast telephone service began as Mayor M. Leslie Denning of Englewood, N.J., called his counterpart in Alameda, Calif. Area codes were first assigned in 1946/47, but they were not fully implemented to allow customers to use "direct dialing" for several years. See http://www.area-codes.com/area-code-history.asp for more about the history of area codes, including the rationale for why more populated areas got lower digits for their codes.

My tie for today is labeled "My People Will Call Your People."
