On this date in 1951, direct-dial, coast-to-coast telephone service began as Mayor M. Leslie Denning of Englewood, N.J., called his counterpart in Alameda, Calif. Area codes were first assigned in 1946/47, but they were not fully implemented to allow customers to use "direct dialing" for several years. See
