31 October 23

My personal tradition for 31 October is celebrating the birthday of Sir Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck, Lord of Nyenhuis, Peckedam and Gellicum, who was born on this date in 1761. It's hard to beat the length of his name and title. (His surname has 12 consonants and (only) 4 vowels!) He rose to official prominence under Napoleon's rule, becoming Grand Pensionary of the Batavian Republic from 1805 to 1806. I think he would give his assent and approval for this tie featuring bold heraldic stripes in red and black, touched with dots and bars of gold and blue. Although the design is not a coat-of-arms, the downward-pointing outline fits the "ordinary" called pile.
