It was on this date in 1776 that the Continental Congress adopted a resolution for independence from England. Two days later they completed the text of the "Declaration." John Hancock signed it on July 4, and then most of the other representatives signed it on August 2. John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail on July 3 that he thought July 2 would be "celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival" marking the "day of deliverance." He was correct about the significance of the event on July 2 but has been proven wrong about which date became the holiday.
